Recently, at the rooftop photovoltaic project site of the Xincheng Area A substation on West Australia Street in the Hac Sa District of the Macao Special Administrative Region, the final batch of tracking brackets has completed commissioning. Amidst a dense urban landscape surrounded by high-rise residential buildings, rows of photovoltaic modules gently “chase the sun” as it moves across the sky—driving this system with unwavering “mobility” are Pavalace’s PA7 series electric actuators.

01 The “Rooftop” Solution for Macau’s Urban Energy Transition

PN

Macao is a small, densely populated territory with scarce land resources, making rooftop distributed photovoltaics a key pathway for the city to achieve its “dual carbon” goals. The rooftop PV project at the Substation in New Town Area A is located on the roof of a substation situated within a high‑density residential district, presenting threefold challenges:

Space constraints:

The roof’s installable area is limited, so it is essential to maximize power generation per unit area.

Harsh climate:

Macau is located along the coast, characterized by high temperatures, high humidity, and severe salt‑fog exposure, and it faces a perennial threat from typhoons, placing extremely stringent demands on the reliability of support structures and drive systems.

Urban Environment:

Located in the heart of a residential area, the equipment must feature low noise, be maintenance-free, and provide ample safety redundancy.

The project ultimately adopted a horizontal single-axis tracking racking system: compared with fixed mounts, the tracking system enables the modules to remain aligned with the sun throughout the day, typically boosting power generation by 15% to 25%. On Macau’s rooftop spaces, where every square meter is at a premium, this solution maximizes solar energy capture from every available inch of sunlight.

02 PA7 electric actuator, the “heart” of the tracking system

For this project, the tracking drive unit is equipped with a Pavales PA7 series electric actuator. Key parameters:

In response to Macau’s maritime climate and typhoon conditions, the PA7 demonstrates three key advantages in this project:

01
Precision Light Tracking: With a 900 mm travel range and an intelligent tracking algorithm, it delivers fully automated operation—returning to its home position at dawn, continuously adjusting its angle throughout the day, and retracting at sunset.

02
Worry-free against typhoons: IP66‑rated high‑grade protection ensures resilience against heavy rain and salt‑spray corrosion; in high‑wind mode, the pushrod locks the bracket at a safe, fully horizontal position, while the structural design helps withstand typhoon‑level impacts.

03
Long-term maintenance-free operation: DC drive, smooth and quiet performance, well-suited for environments such as substation rooftops that are sensitive to electromagnetic conditions and limited maintenance windows, thereby reducing lifecycle O&M costs.

03 A Real-World Record of Engineering Racing Against the Weather

In August, Macau’s weather was highly variable. Despite overcast conditions at 28°C and slippery roof surfaces after the rain, the team successfully completed the installation of the push rods and the alignment of the axis. With droplets still clinging to the module surfaces, everyone remained meticulous and thorough, executing each step—bolt tightening, conduit routing, and wire threading—with unwavering attention to detail.

From the chemical anchors in the column bases, to the assembly tolerances of the beam pivots, and to the aligned installation of the joints at both ends of the push rods, every detail directly determines the reliability of the tracking system. The Pavales team collaborated on-site with the project’s general contractor, completing delivery and commissioning according to the scheduled milestones.

04 Getting Photovoltaics Moving in the Greater Bay Area

The Macau New City project marks another successful deployment of Pavalace’s tracking drive systems in the high‑density urban environments of Hong Kong and Macau. From desert‑based solar farms to city rooftops, and from fixed mounting structures to intelligent tracking solutions, Pavalace continues to leverage its core expertise in electric actuators and control systems to deliver reliable drive solutions for a wide range of complex operating conditions.

Looking ahead, the company will continue to deepen its presence in the Guangdong–Hong Kong–Macao Greater Bay Area and overseas markets, enabling more rooftops to harness the power of the sun.
